[ABRIDGED PRESS ASSOCtATIONr REPORT.) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Freda?. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. DESTITUTE PERSONS BILL. The Attorney-General (Dr. Findlay) ; moved that the amendments made by the. House in the Destitute Persons Bill beagreed to, except clauses 18 and 70. In these cases the House had misconceived what the true position was. The motion was agreed to, and a committee set up to draft reasons for the disagreement. MEASURES PASSED. The Post and Telegraph Amendment Bill was read a third' time and passed. The Kauri Gum Industry Amendment Bill, and the Counties Amendment Bill were read a third time and passed. NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND. The debate on the second reading of the National Provident Fund Bill, was resumed by the Hon. T. Paul (Otago). Several members spoke on the measure, and the debate was adjourned. The Council adjourned. In the evening the debate was continued and the second reading agreed to. SECOND READINGS. The Local Bodies' Loans Amendment Bill, and Taranaki Scholarships Endowment Bill and the Education Reserves Amendment Bill were read a second tims. THE GAMING BILL. Dr. Findlay moved the second reading of the Gaming Act Amendment Bill, the provisions of which he briefly explained. The Hon. J. D. Ormond (Hawke's Bay) seconded the motion. In many respects he said, the Bill went in the direction in which all true sportsmen wished to j see the law amended. particularly j as regards bookmakers. He objected to sub-clause 2 of clause 5, which provides that the Commission in determining clubs to which licenses shall be granted shall ! give preference to those clubs which use the totalisator at one meeting only in any year. The Attorney-General promised to have the sub-section 6truck out when the Bill was in committee. The debate was adjourned and the Council rose at 10 p.m. until Monday at 2.30 p.m.
