ELLERSLIE: ; ROAD : BOARD. At a meeting of the Elkrslio Road Board on the 25th inst. there were present Messrs. Wilkinson (chairman), Somerfield, Hill, Peek, and Gavin. The sanitary inspector , ; was instructed to seo that a long-standing nuisance in tho Ladies' Mile was abated at once. Messrs. Dadley's representative wrote asking tho Board to push on with the reading of the estate as agreed on, and Messrs. Shearer and Eastgate requested that tho 50ft road known as Morrin-str-eet should remain, at that width. After a very long discufision, it was decided that neither the legal aspect of the caso nor tlio interests of the ratepayers would permit this, and that Bft must bo reserved for future widening,, owners of properties to- have the use of the strip in the interim. A request made i by Mr. Adams for a crossing in Robertstreet was granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. Several recommendations made by the Works Committee were agreed to, the chief being that tha telephone bureau should be accessible at all hours, and that a claim be inserted in the Board's road formation regulations that the grades bo worked out by authorised surveyors, and the plans submitted. to tho Board. An application was made for the formation of a footpath in the Ladies' Mile by Mrs. Rountese, who offered to . subscribe £5. The clerk was instructed to report. It was resolved to call tenders for the removal of trees and the pitching of the road bed in Sproston Avenue and Albert-street. A building permit was issued to Mr. Green for a dwellinghouse at the corner of Panmuro and Seymour Roads. Accounts wore passed for payment to the amount of £58 lis 6d. ~ . '__r________ "THE! GOSPELSv AND: CRITICISM." The last of & series of lectures on "The Gospels «nd" Modem Criticism" was given in tho Fedecral Club Roons Isst evening by the Rev. F. Sinclair*, M.A.. The lecturer took for biswbjeot "Some Results of Gospel Criticism: The Histol-io Jesus." His remarks were attentively listened to by those present.'" - MISSION TO SEAMEN. The: fi?st concert in the new Seamen's Institute in O'Connell-stroet was given last night: to an exceptionally large audience of seafaring men and workers, the large hall being entirely filled. The performance was . arranged a.nd stage: -managed by Mrs. Dawes, and included a great variety of enjoyable songs* and recitations, all of which received vesj hearty appreciation. Among the performances were Misses McKay, Roche, Messrs. Chevis, c Farr, Van Braokle, Eyre, ana Bromby. A sailor song by Mr. G. Saunders, a sailor, was loudly encored. In the interval Mr. R. G. Graham made a short epeech in commemoration of the opening of the new hallj ;md called for cheers for the institute, and. for the mis- : sioner and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur P. Cowie. The Rev. J. P. Cowie (brother of the missioner) also spoke, and called for j cheers from the visitors for the sailors. Tea and refreshments were served during the evening, - and a thoroughly enjoyable evening concluded with the National Anthem, . followed by cheers for the performers. MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD i BOARD. A meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held on Tuesday evening, when there wore present: Messrs. Chas. Bagloy. (chairman), T. E. Hayr, C. Worrall, J. Haslett, J. Ambury, E. J. Herd, and T. F. , Booth (clerk). The Mount Eden Borough Council invited the Board to appoint delegates to consider the question of providing a sanitary depot. Messrs. Bagley, Haalett, and Hayr were appointed delegates, but members indicated that the Board is opposed to a depot being established in Mount Roskill district. It was resolved that Messrs. Bagley, Haslett, and Hayr meet Captain Goodwyn-Archer! superintendent of the Veterans' Home, to the proposed improvement of Mount Albert Road, near the home... A resident of . Hillsboro' was given seven days' notice to remedy a nuisance. The contractor for roading Islington Estate wrote suggesting a. coating of 4in to : sin, instead of 9in of metal. Referred to Messrs. Bsgley, Hayr, and Haslett to, deal with. -Plans and specifications for the formation of, Ridge and Queenstown Roads were considered, and it was decided to advertise for tenders for the work forthwith. :•■■■■ '■■■ ■ _ ' )!
