MEETINGS.

SUNDAY-SCHOOL UNION

Another meeting ill connection with the Auckland Sunday-school Union was held in the Tabernacle last evening:. The building was tilled by a large gathering, and amongst those on the platform were the Mayor ot Auckland (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) and Mrs. Bagnail. The Mayor presented certiucates to the representatives of the different schools, and the prizes were presented by -Mrs. Bagnall. During the evening the He v. U. Bond gave an interesting address, and some litt-een girls belonging to the International Bible Headers' Association gave a demonstration.

A very enjoy auto time was spent by the visiting delegates ana local Sunday-school workers on. Thursday evening, at tlie Weststreet. Church of (Jurist, wnere the annual social was held. In the absence, through illness, of Mr. A. J. l'lntrican, Mr. L- K. i'iunner presided over the gatnering, and gave a hearty welcome to the visitors, the cnurch was tastefully decorated, and the walls hung with photographs of prominent .Sun-day-school workers, buildings, - and equipment. Various articles of modern equipment were also on exhibition, such as cranio and honour rolls, stereoscopic views, sand tables, blackboards, attendance barometers, and other appliances for interesting and educating the scholars. During the evening a short " round table conference ' was held, on " Buildings and Equipment," the delegates and friends freely participating in an interesting discus-ion of how best- to build, equip, and improve the Sunday-school. After a social cliat over a cup of tea, the meeting was brought to a close with a favourite farewell hymn. WA ITEM ATA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ■A meeting of tho Vaitemata Chamber of Commerce was held in the Council Chambers, Devonport, 011 Thursday night, when there was a good attendance of members, the president (Mr. 11. l'arnham) presiding. The secretary reported that tho National Bank had definitely decided not to open a branch at Devoyiport. The Bank of .New Zealand had been approached, and a requisition containing: 54 signatures had been handed to the manager, asking lor the establishment of a brapcli open daily for full banking facilities at Devonport. Each subscriber to the requisition has agreed to open an account with the branch, if established. It was decided that all full members residing over five miles from Devonport Post Office bo allov?ed a rebate of s=. A remit from the Red vale branch, to be forwarded to the Wnitemata Countv Council through the representative for Takapuna Hiding, complained of tho bad state of the East- Coast Road, between Takapuna and Kedvale, and requested that some improvements be effected. It was decided to forward tho remit. ONEHUNGA METHODIST CIRCUIT. Tito quarterly meeting of the Onchungn Methodist Circuit was held on Thursday in the schoolroom. Owing to the adsence of the superintendent, the Itev. J'. ,1. Gibson, through indisiwflition, the Hev. W. Heady presided over a largo and representative meeting-. The linanci.il n-port of tho circuit stewards showed a debit balance of £28 on the quarter, and this, with the debit balance brought forward, made a total deficit, of £50. Encouraging rejxirts were given of tho Sunday-schools. '11 recent bazaar, held in aid of the Onehunga enlargement scheme, resulted in the very gratifying addition of £55 to the fund. Much credit was due to the friends who worked so indefatigably. As the Rev. Gibson will lie transferred to Australia next April, it was resolved to leave the appointment of a minister to the conference. Messrs. 0. 11. Douglass mid A. J. l'njilo were elected substitute representatives to tbe approaching Synod. A hearty vote of thanks was given to the Rev. W. Ready for presiding over the meeting. SAILORS' HOME COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Auckland .Sailors' Homo Council was held last evening, those present being: The president (Mr. Thomas Cresham), Captain Fleming, and Messrs. P. J. Nerheny, J. Magee, K. Phipjis, arid K. H. I'otter. The finance Committee recommended (hat tho question of installing electric light throughout the premises, in place of gas, be deferred for 12 months. Mr. Potter considered this would bo a mistake, suiting that, in his opinion, a saving of 25 per cent, would be effected if electric lighting were installed. Mr. Nerheny thought the Sailors' Homo Council should do nothing in the matter until the city's new electric power station is erected. The chairman also thought that-, in view of the possibility of electric lighting charges being reduced, the recommendation of the committee should be adopted. The recommendation was approved. It was suggested that (Ik? work be undertaken under the supervision of t.ho foreman of works, and the Works Committee was empowered to deal with the matter. It was deciucd to order two scow loads of scoria for Hall's Road, two loads for Pirkdalo Road, and one load for liaveloek-street. A letter irom the Waiteiuata Rowling Club, suggesting that, the recreation reserve held by the Council, near the gasworks, be placed in order for a, bowling green and croquet lawn, was referred to the Works Committee. The Northcote Borough Council wrote asking for information regarding the terms upon which the Northcote Council could assume joint control with Birkenhead of this area for recreation purpose*. It was resolved that the town clerk supply the information. Mr. R. Carlquest was appointed lamp-lighter. It was decided that a poll of tho ratepayers bo taken at- the earliest opportunity on the proposal to raise a loan for a water supply and for metalling the roads. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans and furnish details for a water supply for the borough, having Lake Takapuna as it« source, the Council to decide the route from the lake. It. was also decided to take a poll of ratepayers oil the proposal to lease for 21 years, at £100 per annum, tho reclaimed area near the wharf, simultaneously with the water supply and road reformation loan mill. It was decided to prepare specifications and call tenders for a night.soil service.
