INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES.
COTTON TRADE TROUBLE. NO SETTLEMENT YET. By Telegraph.— Association.— London, October 3. Prospects of settling the trouble in the cotton trade looked more hopeful yesterday, but now are gloomy. Mr. Askwith, representing the Board of Trade, was negotiating on the basis of Howe, over whose case the trouble arose, taking a holiday during arbitration, or being employed in another mill, the loser on arbitration ultimately paying his wages. There would thus be no surrender of principle on either side. The master cottonspinners rejected the proposal, and a new basis of compromise must/ be found. (Received October 4, 11.30 p.m.) London, October •*. The cotton operatives demanded that Howe be found work at another mill. The employers replied that they would recommend the mill owners to give Howe the first vacancy. The operatives replied that they must insist on his employment as a preliminary to arbitration. Mr. Askwith suggested a joint conference prior to arbitration to discuss their powers under the. Brookland's decision to alter working conditions. The operatives have agreed to this. Some cotton mills, believing that a settlement was reached on Sunday, opened yesterday, but closed again an hour later. The error led to the Doxology and Te Deum being sung in some churches and chapels. GERMAN METAL WORKERS. LIKELIHOOD OF LOCK-OUT. (Received October 4, 9.50 p.m.) Berlin, October 4 The prospect of a lock-out of 630,000 metal workers is gloomy. Electricians threaten to strike in sympathy if this takes place. A YEAR ON STRIKE. MEN STILL HOLDING OUT.. (Received October 4; 11.30 p.m.) London, October 4. Nine hundred miners at the Clifton Colliery, Nottinghamshire, after being on strike for a year in consequence of the readjustment of wages owing to the instalment of new machinery, have now rejected the amended terms submitted by the employers.
