[BY SENTINEL.] The transfer of Lieutenant G. T. Kretschmar from the active list (unattached) to the Ponsonby Rifle Cadets, with rank of lieutenant, -has been approved. The services of the King's Veteran Guards {honorary reserve corps) with headquarters at Auckland, have been accepted as from August 23, 1910. "A" Squadron First Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifle* will parade at the Outer Domain on the 22nd inst. for inspection by Lieutenant-Colonel W. V. Holgate, O.C. "B" company, First. Infantry Battalion, have vacancies lor a few good men, who, if they enroll during the next two weeks, will be able to capitate for the present volunteer year, thus getting in one year's service, by attending vamp and other parade;,. The first territorial camp to be held in the Auckland military district under the new scheme, will commence at Mr. McLaughlin's farm, Papatoetoe, on the 22nd mst. Over 300 men are expected to go into camp under Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Reed, O.C. A verv enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the No. 2 Company Garrison Artillery and their guests on Saturday evening* last, at the Tiff en, j Queen-street, to celebrate the winning by the company of the Kirker cup- Captain Potter, "the popular officer commander of the company has reason to be prou'd of his company winning the trophy last year, as the corps went into camp with 75 per cent, of * recruits. The results also show the great progress the company has made since . Captain Potter took charge. An interesting topic among the territorials at present is the forthcoming annual ball, of the No. 2 Company Garrison Artillery. This ball has been held svery -vear since the corps was founded, j and "that to be held on Friday at the Society of Arts Hall, promises to be in even- j wav successful. The committee which j have the matter in hand is energetic, and j complete arrangements have been made | for the comfort and enjoyment of their | quests, amongst whom will be the officer- j commanding the division, and most of the | officers of the garrison. No. 1 company, Native Rifles are for- > tunate in having* such an enthusiastic ofti- t cer as Lieutenant Yal. Dunne. Since Mr. j Dunne threw in his lot with the company , it has improved even its past i high standard of efficiency, and his abili- I ties as a boxer and wrestler promise to | improve the good physique of the corps, ] Mr. Dunne has promoted a boxing and wrestling class, vrhicfl is highly appreciated by all ranks. It is the intention of the management to hold a tournament in the near future. The second class will be held this (Wednesday) evening at Lieutenant Dunne's private gymnasium. No. 1 company Native Rifles (B company) opened their shooting season on Saturday at Penrose, with a match between two teams chosen from the members present on the range. The team captained by Sergeant E. C. Smith, won after a very interesting contest, and each I winner was presented with a handsome j tie bv Captain M. N. Atkinson. A notable feature of the contest was the splendid j shoot bv Private Prescott (who had never | fired a'rifle before) scoring 29 points at j 600 yds and 26 points at 500 yds. Trophy shooting will be commenced on Saturday next,, when competitions for the first of a long list of trophies will be begun. The shooting members of "A" Squadron First Auckland Mounted Rifles, were well catered for en Saturday.' The A class fired the first stage for the New Zealand Herald's, trophy, and the B class, the first stage for Smith and Caughey's trophy. Great interest was shown "in the match by the fact- that about 30 members rolled out. Some very good scores were put up, viz.:— Trooper Moore's 95 in the A class, and Trooper Allen's 49 in the B class. Much promise was shown by the younger shots; some of them, although out f<*r the first time, put up very creditable scores. With the able coaching that they first received from the officers who. are all first-class shots, they should rapidly improve. Next Saturday, trophies for both classes will be fired for, A class, first stage. Auckland Star's trophy, B class,..final stage Smith »nd Caughey's trophy. Judging by present appearances, J(.he A.M.E. will be able to enter two good teams at the next A.R.A. meeting. ' The first team especially should give a good account of themselves, as it contains five men* who can .be reckoned among the first order of Auckland riflemen. The present cham- •. pion team of Auckland will have to be on their mettle to retain their laurels.
