NAVAL EXPENDITURE.

KEIR HARDIE'S OPINIONS. DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE. By Telegraph.— Association.— Copyright. (Received October 4, 12.30 a.m.) London, October 3. Mr. Keir Hardie, M.P., speaking at Dumbarton, said that both Liberals and Tories made fools of themselves in defending the expenditure on the navy. The plea put forward was that such expenditure was necessary for the defence of the Empire, but he was of the opinion that Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa were well able to take care of themselves. India and Egypt, Mr. Keir Hardie maintained, were the real causes of the trouble. Referring to the boilermakers' dispute he expressed the hope that the boilermakers would stand firm at any cost against any attempt to impose conditions derogatory to their manhood.
