AFRAID OF MARRIAGE.

GIRLS DROWN THEMSELVES. Mail news received in Sydney from the East last week states that a sad event has been reported from Canton. As is well known, the life of newly-married women in some parts of China is not very happy, and it occasionally occurs that young girls band themselves into leagues, swearing never to be married. In the particular village in which the tragedy took place, six girls, hearing that they were soon to be married, formed a league, went to the bank of the river, tied themselves together, and threw themselves into the water. A rescue was attempted, and when the bodies were taken out four were found dead. The remaining two were restored to consciousness. The six i;irls were about 17 or 18 years of age.
