STATE COAL.
WHAT THE RAILWAYS USE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Sunday. A complaint in regard to the quality of the State coal used on the railways was mentioned by Mr. R. A. Wright, member for Wellington South, in the House of Representatives early yesterday morning. He eaid that he was informed that fine coal was invariably used. It was represented to him that the State Coal Department lined oft' very line coal on to the Railway Department, and, as a result, a great deal of waste took place. He suggested that the coal should be mixed with .Newcastle coal, for if that were clone, it would be better for the men and less costly to the Department. The Hon. J. A. Millar (Minister for Railways), said that State coal was only used on. the level lines, and then it was half screened and half slack. Never at any time was unscreened coal used alone. As a matter of fact, they often had complaints from mineowners that the Government would take nothing but screened coal. Ho would not deny that the Government did take sonio unscreened coal, but that, was to help the mines, and it was always mixed with screened coal.
