The death of the ninth Earl of Stamford recalls tho romantic unions of the two previous holders of the title. His uncle, the eighth earl, who died in 1890, was married three, times, in each case to a woman of humble birth. Indeed, his third marriage was to a. woman of colour in South Africa, named Martha Solomon, who had formerly been a servant in his house. The seventh earl, who died in 1835, married a music hall favourite named Kitty Cocks. After tho marriage Lady Stamford succeeded in securing a box' at the opera immediately adjoining the Royal box. When Queen Victoria discovered this she refused to attend he opera while Lady Stamford occupied the adjoining box. Lady Stamford declared that the Queen might please herself, and she stuck to her box, with the result that the opera saw no more of the Queen that season.*
