WHANGAMARINO SWAMP.
LEVELS TO BE TAKEN.
[Br TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL correspondent.]
Wellington, Friday. A plea for the drainage of tho Whangamarino Swamp, in the Lower Waikato, was made in the House of Representatives to-day, by Ir. \V. F. Massey (Leader of the Opposition) who said that lie was informed that there was 24ft of fall between Mercer and tho sea, and if that, was eo it should be possible to drain the huge area- of 150,000 acres (including 100,000 acres of Crown land) in the Lower "Waikato. Dried swamps made the best dairying country, and the land was of good quality if drained. It would sooti fetch £5 an acre, instead of ss, as at present. A surveyor should be sent as soon as possible to take levels. Mr. F. Lang (Manukau) said that he hoped that the fact that drainage operations would work in as part of the scheme to establish water carriage with the Waikato, would not prevent their being undertaken. Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, said that as soon as possible a. surveyor should be sent to take levels and furnish a report. As soon as tho Government got that report it would go into the whole position. The possibility of taking traffic away from the Railway Department would never be allowed to stand in the way of land settlement.
