A party of 32, mostly Portuguese, and including nine children, was out on the bay in a large boat, which was suddenly drawn into a whirlpool. The boat capsized, and all were precipitated into the swirling waters. Efforts to rescue them were rendered impossible, on account of there being no craft available large enough to approach the whirlpool, and all were drowned. ; The bay was teeming with sharks, and many of the unfortunate victims were devoured.
