, VALUELESS CHEQUES. NINE MONTHS IMPRISONMENT. At the Police Court on Thursday, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., James Percy "Williamson, alias J. Williams, alias A. Mills, was charged with (1) obtaining goods to the value of £3 5s and £6 15s in money at Waitara on April 14, by presenting a valueless cheque, and (2) obtaining £10 on April 30 at Auckland from Thomas Storey by means of a valueless cheque. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Chief-Detetctive Marsack stated the accused was already serving a term of imprisonment on «. similar charge, committed at Rotorua. The Court sentenced accused to nine months' imprisonment, to run concurrently with the term now being served. ASSAULT AND OBSCENE LANGUAGE Lars Marius Christian Larsen, for whom Mr. A. Moody appeared, was charged with a breach of the peace, assault on one Bree, and with the use of obscene language on two occasions. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges, but pleaded extenuating circumstances in regard to the assault. He was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment on the charges of obscene language, and a fine of 20s and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment, for assault, the sentences to run concurrently. • UNWELCOME GUESTS. In the case of two Italian seamen, named Guiseppe Cennamo and Raffaile Annelo (for whom Mr. Lundon appeared), charged with deserting from the Italian ship Doride and being in the Dominion in contravention to the Immigration Restriction Act, a remand was granted till Monday. Mr. Lundon protested against the men being detained in prison, and stated that at the proper time he would take proceedings on behalf of the men for unlawful detention. BY-LAW CASES. Charles Fisher Gardner, who did not appear, was lined 10s and costs for leaving a motor car standing in Queen street for two hours without reasonable excuse. Martin Roberts was fined 5s and costs for leaving a cart and horse standing in Custom-street longer than was necessary to load or unload goods. Thomas .Lowe was fined 5s and costs for leaving a hawker's barrow in "Vulcan Lane. A CHARGE WITHDRAWN. ; James Edward O'Connor pleaded not guilty to the theft of a silver watch, valued at £3, from some person unknown. The chief-detective stated that as the informant in the case had left the Dominion the police had no evidence to bring forward. The charge was accordingly withdrawn. ANOTHER CHANCE. Mary Gillies, a well-dressed young woman, appeared on remand charged under the Infants Act with having wilfully exposed a child under the age of 14 years in a manner likely to cause the child unnecessary suffering. The facts of the case ' were that late on the night of May 11 the accused was found in a state of helpless drunkenness in the Domain Road, and with her was her child, about five years of age, in a wet and chilled condition and poorly clad. The accused had previously been convicted and fined for drunkenness. Mr. Lundon made an appeal for the woman, who was the wife of a labourer, but both had given way to drink. When * unaffected, ; by drink -both -mother and father were fond of their children. The Court decided to give accused another chance. A conviction was recorded, and an order made for the issue of a prohibition order against accused.. REMANDS. , Henry Smith, charged with stealing a . pair of trousers and vest to the value of £2 10s, the property of one R. C. Grey, on May 17, at Auckland, was, on the application of Chief-Detective Marsack, remanded for one week. Leonard . Cuff, charged with deserting from H.M.S. Pioneer, was remanded , for a week, or until 'such time as he could be put aboard one of His Majesty's vessels. ~..-■ • r ■■•:':*.' '*- ■ Joseph Nolan was remanded to appear at Hamilton on May 24 on a charge of stealing a cheque to the value of £7 6s 9d, the property of Christopher Miller,, on April 1 at Te Awamutu. DRUNKENNESS. /• '' A. first offender for drunkenness, who pleaded guilty, was fined 5s and costs, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Walter Humby pleaded guilty to having been found drunk in Queen-street and procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order against him. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged, and on the second was fined 20s and costs, in default 14 , days' imprisonment. Annie Roach, an old offender, was sent to prison for six months for drunkenness and for being an incorrigible rogue. Bridget Hunter, pleaded guilty to being drunk in Karangahape Road and to procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. She was convicted and ordered to be sent back to the Costley , Home, from whence she came. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Albert .Taylor, a youth of about 18 years of age, was charged with assaulting a girl of 14 years and 11 months, knowing he?- to be under the age of 16 years. Mr. Lundon appeared for . accused, who pleaded not guilty- : After hearing evidence accused" was committed to stand his trial at the criminal session of the Supreme Court. __________ MISCELLANEOUS. Eric Ericksen was charged with, having ■ on May 2 at Helensville stolen a watch and chain, valued at 355. He pleaded guilty, but stated that he had been, on a drinking bout and took the watch, but with no intention of stealing it. The Court took a lenient view of the case, and merely convicted accused and ordered him to pay £2 and costs. Edward McMahon was convicted on a charge of indecency, and fined £10 for breach of his prohibition order.. YESTERDAY'S SITTING. At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr. E. 0. Cutten, S.M.; four first offenders for drunkenness were each fined 5s and costs, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. John Angus, Walter Porter, Walter ~ Harkins, Henry Agincourt Beresford, and James Bowen, each of whom had a previous conviction against his name for drunkenness, were fined 10s, or 48 hours' imprisonment, for repeating the offence. Patrick McMahon was remanded till May 27 or. a charge of having stolen tin overcoat valued at £6, the property of Hans Scott. James Cornwell, also charged with the theft of an overcoat valued at £3 ss, was remanded for a week. Olga Hallett, alias Clarke, alias Ellis, was charged with importuning and being a rogue and vagabond. Accused was remanded ! till Friday. - / ; '• Peter Polseni, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour .for stealing ten sacks, valued at ss, from Messrs- J. J. Craig and Co., Ltd.
