MOTORING.
; Tho members of the Auckland Automobile Association held the monthly run to St. Heliers Bay last Saturday. There was a good number of cars out. The motorists were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and -Mrs. Rr. A. Dexter, the outing terminating with a pleasant run back to town. • Much attention has been directed to a. recent experiment in road-making in England, a matter of intorest to cyclists and motorists in this part of tho world. The now system of construction is the invention of Mr." G. Henderson, of Truro (Wales),\who clnims that his mode of road-making makes for resilence, absence of dust and noise, and can be used over the ton of old roads. The method in question consists in spiking down on tho roadway sheets of expanded steel, similar to those widely used for the reinforcement of concrete, and laying over these' a depth of 2in of ordinary road material, treated with coal tar, the latter being rolled well in. Expanded steel is obtained by passing solid sheets of mild steel through a machine which cuts slits at regular intervals, while the sheet is forcibly expanded, the result being a large sheet of diamondshaped netting. .When used in conjunction with properly prepared tar and crushed stone, it is contended, as the result of the experiments already made, that it will give a road surface of remarkable endurance. Here is a method of road-making that might bo tried in this country. .
