THE HOSPITAL ELECTIONS.
OPERATION OF THE NEW ACT.
THE AUCKLAND DISTRICT.
The first election of members of the hospital and . charitable ' aid boards under the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act of last year will be held on Wednesday, the 16th inst. ' The nomination of candidates will close to-morrow.
The new Auckland Board will consist of 11 members, of whom four will be elected from the city, two from the combined boroughs' of Mount Eden, Grey Lynn, Parnell, Newmarket, Onehunga, and the Ellerslie town district; two from the road districts of the Eden county, of which Remuera is the principal, one from the road districts of Manukau, of which Otahuhu is the principal; one from the combined boroughs of Devonport, Northcote, and Birkenhead; and one from the Waitemata and Rodney counties and the Helensville Town Board.
In the city and borough the district electors' roll will be used, and in the other districts the ratepayers' roll will be adopted for the purpose of the elections. No voter will be allowed to exercise more than one. vote..
An interesting position has arisen in regard to the election of a member for the road districts in the Manukau county. At the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday a letter was read from Mr. E. West, clerk to the Otahuhu Road Board (and returning officer for the county), .staling that owing to the expense involved the Otahuhu Board -had decided not to proceed with the election, but to allow the member to be appointed by the Government, as provided for by the Act ,in the event of no election taking place. The Otahuhu road district is the principal district in the .county, but there are 28 other districts, who, it is stated, have not been consulted, and the question of the authority of one board to decide for nearly 30 others will probably be raised. It is understood that one intending candidate, in order to test the matter, intends to forward his nomination paper to the returning officer despite the announcement ' that has been made. The present boards will remain in office till the end of this month, and the new boards, will meet for the first time on April 1. The pfresent chairman of the Auckland Board (Mr. C. D. Grey) will not seek re-election, but most of the other sitting members will again offer their services. Mr. E. H. > otter, a member of the Auckland, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, has decided, at the request of the Mount Eden Borough Council, to seek re-election to the Board. ..' i It was stated at last night's meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council that Mr. W. Murray (a member of the Council) had been nominated' for one of the seats on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, ' and ' that Mr. H. Schofield (another member of the Council) also intended to be a. candidate. The Council decidod to take no action in regard to the selection of candidates. j At a meeting of the Archliill Road Board which was held last evening confidence was expressed \in the present members of the Auckland Hospital ' and Charitable Aid Board. On the motion of Mr. Ewnn it was unanimously resolved that the Board ask Messrs. Coyle and Jenkin, the present representatives for Eden County on the j Board, to • offer themselves for reelection. ■
