RACE MEETINGS BILL.

NO OBJECTION BY CLUBS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —TRESS ASSOCIATION*.] Wellington, Tuesday. The second reading of the Bace Meetings - Bill was moved by Mr. Buddo in the House of Bepresentatives this afternoon with a brief explanation, which was not considered sufficient by Mr. Massev. The object of the Bill is to limit the number of race meetings, the Minister having discretion in granting licenses to racing clubs, and to provide for breaches of the law by fine or imprisonment. Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Herrics referred to j the Bill, the latter stating that the racing | clubs had no objection to it provided it was well administered. Mr. Buddo replied and the second reading was agreed to. Mr. Wright moved that the Bill operate from January instead of April, but this was rejected on the voices. Mr. Davey moved to insert a new clause providing that race meetings be reduced by 40 days per annum. This was ruled out of order, and a motion to report progress in order to obtain the Speaker's ruling on the point was carried by 56 to 14. The Speaker ruled that the new clause was not in order, being an amendment of the Gaming Act. 1 The Bill was then reported with amendments.
