THE DEFENCE BILL.

ONLY THREE OPPONENTS. SIXTY-ONE VOTES IN FAVOUR. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Defence Bill was further considered in committee of the House of Representatives to-night. On the motion of Sir Joseph Ward the fallowing amendments were made: —Clause 26, which provided for the taking over the assets and liabilities of volunteer corps by the Grown was struck out, and new clauses | added providing for the volunteers becoming the territorial force and providing for the defence cadets .and reserve corps ceasing to exist. At clause 30, which classifies the persons exempt from militia service, Mr. Allen moved that medical practitioners bo excluded from the list, of persons exempt. The amendment was lost on the voices. When tho clauses imposing the general liability to training were reached Sir Joseph Ward moved an amendment providing that boys attending secondary schools shall remain in the senior cadets until they leave tho school, even if they are then over 18. This was agreed to. Mr. T. E. Taylor moved that the senior cadets only drill for four whole days, instead of six. This was defeated by 65 votes to 3. Mr. Taylor also moved that the half-day drills be reduced to six. This was defeated by 61 to 4. Mr. McLaren moved to delete the. provision for 24 night drills, on the ground that it would interfere with technical education. This was defeated by 54 to 3. Mr. T. E. Taylor moved to delete the provision for cadets being attached to the dofence units. This was defeated by 59 to 3. AN INEFFECTIVE STONEWALL. [BY TELKGBATH. —SrKCIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday morning. Messrs. T. E. Taylor, Hogg, and McLaren about midnight started an ineffective stonewall against tne compulsory clauses of the Defence Bill. The divisions went against them by 57 votes to 3 and 61 to 4, Mr. Forbes joining with the malcontents on occasion. The Bill is still under consideration at 1.10 a.m., and will be finished before daylight.
