THE SILT QUESTION.
ACTION BY THE GOVERNMENT.
j The question of the silting of the Ohinemuri and Waihou Rivers was referred to by Mr. Massey this afternoon. He said the matter was a serious one, and he asked the Prime Minister to state what action the Government intended to take in ' regard to it. "' ! Sir Joseph Ward said that there were at present petitions on the subject before the Mines Committee, and until the. committee reports he thought that the matter might be permitted to remain in abeyance. The question of protecting the interests of the settlers, and, at the same time, preserving those .als the important mining industry, was a difficult one. The matter had already been investigated seve- ; ral times, and after the Mines Committee had reported the matter would be «gone into again. Mr. Massey: Will something be done this session? > - r Sir Joseph Ward: We want to do something if we possibly can.
