THE GOVERNOR'S SALARY.

A SUGGESTED REDUCTION. A radical proposal was made by Mr. T. E. Taylor this evening. He said that in view, of the _ recent retrenchment he had intended to move for the reduction of the salary of His ' Excellency the Governor by £2000 a year. He did not see why the Governor should not stand in tight times with the whole population, and have his expenditure cut down with that of so many others. He (Mr. Taylor) had found that the only way to bring" this matter to a vote of the House was by the introduction of a Bill. He would therefore ask leave next sitting day to introduce a Bill to reduce the Governor's salary from £5000 to £3000. (Laughter.) When the Governor's salary was previously increased, Mr. Taylor added, there was not a tittle of evidence to show that he was underpaid or sweated. PRIME MINISTER'S EXPENSES. Mr. Phillipps has given notice to move for a return showing the total cost to the Dominion "of the attendance of the-Prime Minister and his secretary or secretaries at the ' recent Naval Defence Conference in England, the return to include travelling, secretarial, and all' incidental expenses ; also for a return showing the cost of (1) the trip to England with the Prime Minister of the Solicitor-General (Dr. Fitchett), (2) the visit to England of Detective Cassells upon the occasion of the Prime Minister's attendance at the Naval Defence Conference, the return to include travelling and all incidental expenses. - . . ..-•"" ■'■' JOTTINGS. Mr. Massey is asking the Government to provide for a playground for the boys of the Auckland Grammar School. The Hon. G. Fowlds, for the Minister for Marine, stated •in the House to-day that a new lighting apparatus would be installed at Jackson's Head, Queen Charlotte Sound. . . '
