MEETINGS.
NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the usual meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last night there were present: Messrs. D. Teed (chairman), A. Seccombe. J. McColl, J. Whyman, A. Whittome. H. Kinder, Jeffrey, King, and W. Edgerley. -
A letter was received from Mr. F. M. King, urging in connection with the cost of the Auckland and suburban drainage schemo that the allocation of the amounts payable by each local body should be on the unimproved values. ■-
A request was received from the holder of a billiard saloon license in Newmarket, asking the Council to amend the by-law to enable him to close his saloon at 11 p.m., instead of 10 p.m., as the saloon-keepers in the surrounding districts did not close till the later hour, and he was thereby losing custom. It was resolved to reply that the Council could see no reason for departing from its by-laws. Tho turncock reported that 66,150 gallons of water had been used in watering the streets, and a total of 1,400,000 gallons consumed in the. borough for the 12 days ending November 16.
LONDON MISSIONS TO SEAMEN. A meeting of tho Auckland branch of the London Missions to Seamen was held on Tuesday evening in the Diocesan Church office, when there were present: The Right Rev. the Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Neligan (chairman), Archdeacon Cole, Messrs. C. C. Kettle, W. H. Hamer, P. G. Ewington, Captain Dudcr, Captain Sergeant, Mr. M. Clarke. The missioner, Mr. Arthur P. 'Cowie, handed in his report, which was full of promise. The committee visited the institute during the evening. ELLERSLIE TOWN BOARD.
At a meeting of the Ellerslie Town Board, held on Tuesday evening, at which Messrs. Wilkinson (chairman), Peek, Smith, Somerfield. and McCallum were present, the clerk reported that ho had conferred with Mr. Cochran© and the Mayor of Onehunga regarding the future water supply from Onehunga, and he would call a special meeting of the Board when be had definite information on the subject. A deputation from the Ratepayers' Association attended the meeting, and asked that the necessary steps be taken to have the water reserve declared a recreation ground. The matter will be investigated and reported to a future meeting.
