COOK ISLANDS.
[FROM* OCR OWN COBBESrON'DENT.J -. • , Aitptjvki, November 8. The Avarua boarding school, the largest on the island, under the superintendence of the London Missionary Society and under the direction of Miss K. Howard, is again about to lose its only European mistress, as Miss Howard leaves to-day per steamer to join her father at Tonga. On October 20 two marriages were celebrated . here, accompanied by the usual feasting. The first was that of Captain Jonasson, local agent of the Cook Island Trading Company, who was married to Mati Tini, the daughter of an influential landholder. The second marriage, celebrated the 6ame day, was that of Mr. A. Wilkinson, local agent for Messrs. Donald and Edenborough, to Miss Naomi Tese, also a landholder. The same day four couples of natives were joined together in matrimony. . The Union S.S. Company's - * steamer Hauroto arrived unexpectedly on October 28, en route from Wellington to Tahiti. It appears that the necessary labourers were not obtainable as usual at Rarotonga, so the steamer had to come on here. After a stay of three hours the Hauroto proceeded on her, voyage to Tahiti, having obtained 40 men here to work cargo at other islands. The Norwegian barque Nelse arrived from Maiden Island on the 6th inst. with a full cargo of 3000 tons of guano for Melbourne. After leaving a dozen time-ex-pired labourers here the barque proceeded on her voyage. There were some 40 timeexpired labourers for Niue on board, so the barque will call first at Niue and then go on to Melbourne.
