The Kingston waterworks were destroyed, and railways and tunnels were blocked, owing to landslides. Several bridges were destroyed.
One-third of the banana plantations on the northern side of the island were ruined. Roads have been rendered impassable, and many villages are isolated.

Jamaica has suffered much from natural phenomena. In 1880, and again in 1893, enormous damage was done by cyclones. There arc two rains seasons, one in the spring and the other in summer, and in the latter the rains are exceptionally heavy, and there are sometimes hurricanes and thunderstorms. On January 14, 1907, an earthquake, followed by a fire, practically destroyed Kingston. In the space of 20 seconds the city was practically shaken into ruins and 1000 persons were killed and as many injured. . . ,\,
