WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.

The Minister for Marine (Hon. J. A. Millar) was asked by a Christchurch interviewer whether it was proposed to introduce legislation making compulsory the installation of a wireless telegraph apparatus on every passenger steamer trading from New Zealand. Mr. Millar said the matter had not come before the Cabinet yet, but he believed it would be only a short time before all passenger vessels voyaging beyond a certain distance from land would have to be equipped with wireless apparatus. The anxiety in connection with the Waratah, following the experience of other vessels in recent years, had suddenly given very great prominence to the subject, both in the United Kingdom and in the colonies, while the United States had also taken the matter up. If any action was taken by the New Zealand Government it would probably be in conjunction with Australia. At anyrate it would be more satisfactory if the Commonwealth and the Dominion co-operated in taking action.
