DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL

At the usual meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last night there were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Handley), and Messrs. W. U. Timewell, R. H. Froude, H. Wilding, J. Taylor, J. Mays, and T. Considine, Captain G. McKenzie, and Dr. Guinness.

A deputation, headed by Mr. W. J. Napier, waited upon the Council with reference to "the state of . Stanley-street. After hearing the. deputation, the Mayor (Mr. Handley) said that in the present state of the Council's finances he could not recommend the Council to undertake any large work in connection with the' street. Mr. Napier said that, if .the Council' contributed £15 towards the removal of a hillock the residents would contribute the balance. The other works could wait a while. The matter was referred to the Streets and Works Committee, the foreman to prepare a plan and an estimate of the cost.

A request for the use of the Council Chambers a« a meeting-place for a proposed Oddfellows' lodge was refused.
