FRUIT HAWKERS.
"P. 8." in his letter re the above subject practically accuses tho Retail Fruiterers' Protective Association of selfishness, because wo are trying to get the city authorities to do their plain duty in this matter by charging the hawkers a fair contribution towards the upkeep of tho city. Selfishness! Indeed, I think the boot is on the other foot, and "P. 8." has got the lion's share of that very bad trait; perhaps he is one of those who aro reaping the benefit derived from the great privilege of having what is practically a shop adjacent to tho main thoroughfare for the infinitesimal sum of 2s 6(1 per week. Let tlio hawker pay a fair rental for tho stand ho occupies, viz., £1 per week. He would then bo contributing less than his fair quota towards tho city rates, as compared with other ratepayers. Surely there is nothing selfish about that. Competition is keen enough in all conscience among tho fruit shopkeepers, as anyone knows who understands anything about, the business. -' J. D. Webster.
