DROWNING ACCIDENTS.

Thames, Friday. A drowning accident occurred to-day in the Piako district, by which a man named Robert McCallum, employed on the Government dredge, lost his life. The deceased fell overboard from the steamer connected with the dredging works, and, although search- is still being made, the body has not yet been recovered. The deceased, who was a native of Scotland, had recently sent Home for his wife and two children to rejoin him, and they are expected to arrive shortly. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION - .] Chbistchtjbch, Friday. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Lewis Albert Elrig, who was found in the River Avon yesterday. A verdict of death by drowning was returned. There was no evidence to show how he got into the water. The late Mr. L. A. Elrig was well known throughout the Dominion in years gone by as traveller for the firm of Skelton, Frostick and Co., with which he was connected for a very long time. The deceased gentleman was also identified very intimately with both craft and capitular Masonry, being an old member of the Canterbury Lodge, No. 1048, and also of several of the Royal Arch Chapters, etc.
