OUT IN THE COLD.
SCHOOL CARETAKERS.
[BY TELEGRAM!.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Chbistcdxiech, Tuesday. The exclusion of school caretakers from •the benefits of the teachers' superannuation fund was discussed between the Hon. G. Fowlds (Minister for Education) and a deputation representing the Sydenham School Committee to-day. The deputation pointed out that the caretaker at the Sydenham school had been in his present position for 25 years, and they had been appointed to wait on the Minister, and ascertain if anything could be done in his and similar cases.
The Minister stated that there was not the slightest chance of any alteration being ' made in the direction indicated. The Government proposed to make provision for every individual to come in under a general Act, but the teachers' superannuation fund was intended to make provision for old teachers who were inclined to hang on when they were really past their work, and boards did not like to remove them. The 'Act clearly did not apply in the case of caretakers.
