COROMANDEL. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel, Tuesday. The ordinary monthly meeting of ■ the Coromandel County- Council -was held, at the Council Chambers yesterday. Correspondence was read from Mr. E. H. Taylor, M.P., offering to assist the Council in obtaining a grant to repair storm, damage. From the Hon. R. McKenzie, in regard to the application for a grant to repair storm damage, stating that he was getting a report as to the'damage. From the Marine Department, in regard to the application for a grant of £300 to extend the Coromandel Wharf, refusing to make the same. From the Northern' Steamship Company, urging the. Council to raise £100, so as to get tlie Government subsidy of £75 to extend the Mercury Bay Wharf. After discussion, on the motion of Mr. Carroll, seconded by Mr. Swindley, a vote of £100 was made for the work. * Messrs. Bennett and Bridson questioned.the power 'of " the Council to vote money for harbour works, and on those grounds voted against the motion. It was resolved that Mr. E. ,H. Taylor, M.F., be asked to attend the next meeting of the Council to discuss the matter of the settlement of goldfields lands, within the county. On the motion of Mr. Swindley, seconded by Mr. Bridson, the usual general rate of six farthings in the pound on the ratable property within the county,' and the special water rate of three farthings in the water supply district, were struck. • It was proposed by Mr. Bennett, and seconded by Mr. Hovell and carried, " That the scheme of expending any moneys derived from the sale of timber, flax, etc., be submitted to the Council for approval before the scheme is submitted to the Government officials for their sanction."
CAMBRIDGE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN ;/CORRESPONDENT.] > . Cambridge, Tuesday. In the Police Court to-day. before Mr. F. O'B. Loughnan. S.M., J. Christenson, Ronald Smith, and Joseph Condor were convicted and fined varying sums for breaches of the borough, by-laws. Mr. ,S. Lewis applied for the cancellation of a prohibition order issued against Eli Mahomet in April last. The magistrate held that it was necessary to bring the application before the two justices who issued the order. A man named A. Thomas was charged, on the information of the police, with having supplied liquor to a native woman at Hautapu, contrary to the provisions of the Maori Licensing Act. Mr. S. Lewis appeared for the defendant. After hearing the .evidence, the magistrate held that the charge, was not proved, and the case was dismissed. • • ; '""' '' A ■" ' ':
A man named .Tame? McDiarmid, in the employ of Martin Roberts, butcher, while slaughtering an animal had the misfortune to cut his leg badly in consequence of the knife slipping. Dr. Edmonds stitched the wound, but it will be two or three weeks before the injured man will be able to resume his duties. . t .."-' '
There were numerous entries for the Cambridge Golf Club's mixed foursomes competition, which resulted in a win for Miss Brooks and Mr. W. F. Buckland, with a net score of ,47 for the nine holes, Miss Ruddock and Mr. F. Ross being' ruuners-up, with 51. The. following were the best cards returned :■— Miss Brooks, and Mr. W. P.; Buckland, 47 net; Miss Ruddock and Mr. F. Ross, 51 net; Mrs.- Thornton and Mr. A. H. Nicoll, 54 net; s Miss I. Cox and Mr. C. P. Stone, 54 net. A match against bogey, 18 holes, will be played on Wednesday "and Saturday, 18th • and 21st inst., under club handicap. . «
