NGAURUHOE VOLCANO.
CONTINUOUS ACTIVITY.
A BIG .. SMOKE CLOUD,
[bt telegram.—special CORRESPONDENT.]
Waiotru, Wednesday. All yesterday afternoon and all last night the forces at work in the crater of Ngaurulioe were in action, and dust-charg-ed steam was pouring down the Waimarino slope of the mountain. After leaving the slopes this steam formed a great smokylooking cloud, which reached across the, sky as far north as Taumarunui. There has been a heavy deposit of black volcanic dust on the Tongariro side since the snowfall, and consequently Ngaurulioe looks like a giant pyramid, white on three sides, and the fourth side black as ink. The cone was clear of mist in the evening, and the effect created by the smoke as seen against the moonlight was most impressive. The wind had then dropped, and the black cloud rose straight above the crater to a considerable height, and then spread out in mushroom form, gradually drifting northward. The activity has continued all to-day.
The snow is now melting from the lower slopes of Ruapehu, but there is still a heavy coating on the higher fields, and on some, of the jagged faces of Tongariro.
