GENERAL POST OFFICE.

The amended plans for the new general post office at. Wellington have now been completed, and if is expected that tenders will be called for the work of erection very shortly. Tim contractor will begin his operations at the street level, the Public: Works Department making foundations and basement walls up to that point. The chief alteration made in the plans since tenders were last called is that the mansard roof storey has been omitted altogether, though provision is made for its addition later on. This means that the building will be of four storeys and a basement at first. A number of other slight alterations have been made with a view to reducing the cost, but they will not affect the accommodation for the public. Their chief result will be to make the building somewhat plainer than was at first contemplated.
