BUCKETS OF BEER.
- A LICENSING PROSECUTION. A report of a licensing prosecution, dealt with at Mangonui on Friday last, before Mr. R. Stone Florance, S.M., has been received by Inspector Cullen from Constable W. Drummond. ; The' defendants were two Austrian gumdiggers, Lui Bakalich and Laurence Sulenta, who run a small store at Lake Ohia, and were charged with having supplied liquor for consumption on other than licensed premises. Evidence was given by five Maoris, who deposed that on February 27 they entered the defendants* kitchen and drank from a bucket of beer, which Bakalich brought tin.:, ; They .-' afterwards ,[ entered the front store, and were provided with another bucket of beer by Sulenta. ; ; i Bakalich ■ pleaded that he was unaware he was doing wrong in giving the Maoris liquor, provided he. did not accept money from them. ! . . . ■The magistrate convicted the defendants, and fined them £25 -each, with £7 2s 3d costs, in default three months' 5 imprisonment. Two months were allowed in which to pay the fines. ~
