FOURTEEN MEN KILLED.

During preparations to admit water to : the almost finished Vittoria, in dock at Birkenhead, a high wind and a high tide broke the '■",' piles, the timber forming a dam. - -»■ The inrush of water caught 19 men who were working in the dock, and swept them away from the platform of a huge crane, which collapsed upon the workmen, pinning them underneath. , .
Five of the men had miraculous escapes, but the rest were killed. ■...-.
