MINISTER FOR MINES.

TOUR OF THE GOLDFIELDS

A DAY AT WAIHI.

[Br TELEGnAPH.— SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]

: Waihi, Wednesday. The Minister for Mines (Hon. R. McKenzie)* spent a busy day at Waihi to-day. The first, tiling this morning he was driven to the tailings plant of the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company, where he made an investigation of the processes being used to deal with the tailings under treatment. The Minister then examined the punt into which the tailings are placed for transference to the company's plant. These are drawn from the bed of the river by centrifugal pumps until the full capacity of the punt (about 40 tons) is reached. On returning to Waihi township Mr. McKenzie and party visited the hospital, the gasworks, and the Beach Road, in connection with which the Minister was deputationised on the previous night.

In the afternoon," after paying a visit to the Waihi mine under the guidance of the superintendent (Mr. H. P. Barry), the Minister unveiled the Seddon memorial, consisting of a lamp and drinking fountain, which has been erected in the centre, of the main street.

To-morrow morning the Minister will leave Waihi for Te . Kuiti. Important business has called him back to Wellington sooner than was expected, and this has necessitated the postponement of the trip over the East Coast railway route until April. Mr. McKenzie will endeavour to be present at a conference of mining inspectors to be held at Waihi next month. He expects to come up from Napier to the conference, visiting Gisborne, Opotiki, Tauranga, etc., en route. At Te Kuiti the Minister will go into the question of the rival routes for the Stratford railway and its connection with the Main Trunk line, probably visiting Ongarue. This business will take about two or. three days, and Mr. McKenzie expects to join at Te Kuiti the train to Wellington which leaves Auckland on Sunday night. It is, however, possible that he will go from Te Kuiti to New Plymouth via Waitara." i -
