AN HOTEL BURNED.
NARROW ESCAPE OF INMATES. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] • Wellington, Wednesday. A fire, early this morning, burned the Paekakariki Hotel to the ground. The lessee is Mr. Hilton. The - hotel was built over 30 years ago, and was a stop-ping-place for the coaches which used to run between Wellington and Wanganui before the railway was built. ; . It contained about 35 rooms . and was owned by Mr. G. Anyon, now residing in Fiji. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The inmates escaped in their night attire. Absolutely nothing was saved, Mr. Hilton losing £80 worth of jewellery.
The building was insured in the Liverpool and London and Globe office for £2100 and the furniture for £200, and the stock for £200, in the same office.
