EXPLOSION OF SPIRITS.
"AFTERNOON TEA" ACCIDENT. [BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.]
Gisborne, Wednesday.' Whilst Mr. A. W. Williamson, of the clerical staff of Messrs. J. J. Niven and Co.'s foundry at Kaiti, was partaking of afternoon tea with a number of fellowworkers yesterday afternoon, he met with a' serious accident. He had. replenished the kettle with water, and, thinking the flame in the spirit lamp had gone out, he was in the act of recharging the apparatus, when the tin containing the methylated spirits ignited and exploded. The content* flew all over the front of Mr. Williamson's clothes, which, were set on fire, and before the flames could be extinguished Mr. Williamson received a severe burning. His eyebrows and face were badly burned, and one hand severely scorched. Mr,. Brown also 1 had his hands burned when assisting to extinguish the flames.
