SOCIAL LEGISLATION.

THE GOVERNMENT'S RESOLVE

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.

(Received January 26, 11.45 p.m.)

- London, January 2G. Apparently inspired articles in the Liberal newspapers indicate the resolve of the Government to eschew any Budget or other measures likely to precipitate a conflict with the House of Lords.

The Government is determined to concentrate its attention, the articles declare, on constructive social legislation during the next two years, dealing specially with poor law reform and the problem of. unemployment.

THE LABOUR PARTY.

JOINED BY THE MINERS,

(Received January 27, 12.10 a.m.)

London, January 26. Mr. J. Ramsay Mac Donald, secretary of the Labour party in the House of Commons, announces that the miners' federation has accepted the Labour party's conditions, and will join that organisation.

The Miners' Federation a few weeks ago passed a resolution to apply for the admission of their Parliamentary representatives to the ranks of the Labour party. The application was accompanied by the condition that the men representing the federation in the House of Commons at. present should not l>e asked to sign the parly's constitution, except in the event of an election. The affiliation of the miners' representatives with the Labour party adds 15 members to the group. They will co-operate with the Lal>our parly on labour questions, and joint meetings will be held at intervals.
