DEEPENING BLUFF HARBOUR.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OW.V CORRESPONDENT.]

Dcnedin, Tuesday. Some month* ago the Bluff Harbour Board embarked on an experiment in berthage deepening for which great advantages were claimed. Hitherto, the. system had been to break up the hard bottom by the use of high explosives, which was a costly business and unsatisfactory in that the evennets of the break could not bo assured. The new method of dealing with tho rock bottom with a Lobnitz rockbreaker is proving eminently satisfactory, the "breaker*/ smashing up the. rock so uniform*ly that no difficulty is experienced in lifting the spoil with the Board's big dredge. At the berth now being operated upon, the Board's staff have obtained an increased depth of 4ft over an area of 50ft by 20ft at a- cost that shows a substantial saving on blasting.
