STRICKEN ITALY.

LOOTERS AT WORK.

SIXTEEN SHOT DEAD.

SIX HUNDRED ARRESTS.

By Telcj'-oDh.— Asiooiation.—Copyright.

(Received January 5, 12.30 a.m.)

Rome, January 4. Sixteen looters at Messina were shot, and 600 arrested, yesterday. Some had killed an -Indian sailor and wounded a Customs official. The sea is casting ashore hundreds of corpses terribly mutilated. The corpses among the ruins are so numerous that it is impossible to bury them, therefore they are being covered with lime and buried in the sea. An Italian engineer states that new houses 30ft in height erected in Reggio and Ferruzzano after the earthquake of 1905, resisted the shocks successfully. Mr. C. Caiger, a naval architect, and Mr. Doresa, a shipowner, both of London, were the only British survivors from the Trinacria Hotel, in Messina. They give a thrilling account of how, in the darkness, they lowered with an improvised rope a Swede, his wife and child from rooms adjoining their own on the third floor, which alone was temporarily spared. They then descended themselves. King Victor Emmanuel and.Queen Helena have returned to Rome from their visit to the stricken areas, and received a great ovation on their arrival. ANOTHER SLIGHT SHOCK. QUEEN SLIGHTLY HURT. HEROIC SAILORS. Rome, January 3. Queen Helena of Italy is working devotedly at the Messina Hospital, where a panic occurred yesterday in consequence of a slight earthquake shock. The Queen was slightly hurt in trying to prevent a stampede. It is stated that His Holiness the Pope has opened up a credit of a million lire in addition to his other gifts to the fund. He is also establishing a hospital of 500 beds at San Marco The citizens of Rome have, decided to present the officers and men of the foreign warships who assisted at Messina and Reggio with medals commemorative of their heroism.
