THE RELIEF FUNDS.
LIBERAL ASSISTANCE. Rome, January 1. The United States supply ship Celtic, which has sailed from New York for Messina, has on board 32,000 dollars' worth of clothing, shoes, and food. The Italian and other naval authorities are organising relief. The Canadian Government has granted £20,000 toward the relief funds. The French subscription list now totals £8000. The British military attache at Rome has proceeded to Messina to intercept the mail steamers Ophir and Bremen in order to request them to give assistance to the refugees. ' AUCKLAND SUBSCRIPTIONS. The following subscriptions to the Italian earthquake fund have been received: — James W. Kelly, £1; C. Nioholls, £1; M. J. Daly, 10s ; , Sidnoy Weetman, £1 Is; Honry N. Naldor, £1; Mrs. Henry N. Naldor, £1; R., 10s; F. E. Hardy, 10s; ' Chas. Hardy, 2s 6d ; James Stone, ss. NEW ZEALAND DISTURBANCES SHOCKS AT WHAKATANE. Mr. J. T. Stevenson, of Auckland, has been advised by letter that a severe earthquake shock occurred at Whakatane at 5.30 p.m. on Christmas Day, lasting for several seconds. Six slight shocks followed within 10 minutes. On Sunday, December 27, a few slight tremors were felt, with a rather sharp shock at 1.40 p.m. Mr. Stevenson's correspondent remarked that it appeared strange that the quakes had hardly been noticed a few miles inland. TREMORS AT CHRISTCHURCH. (bt telegraph.— press association.] Christchurch, Sunday. An earthquake was felt in Christchurch on Thursday evening at 7.20. It was also felt at Hanmer Springs.
