THE WAIHEKE REGATTA. LARGE GATHERING AT COWES BAY. The annual Waiheke regatta, which took place yesterday at Cowes Bay, was favoured with ideal aquatic weather, and there was a, very largo attendance. Excursions to this charmingly situated and popular resort were run by. three of .the Northern Company's boats. Tho Wakatere left at nine o'clock with nearly 1500 passengers and the Waimario and Daphne, which left shortly afterwards, also took several hundreds e;;ch. The number was also swelled by the large number of people at present in temporary residence at Cowes Bay and the adjacent holiday resorts of Waiheke. Many of the visitors spent . the day along the waterfront, whilst others indulged in short excursions about the hill sides above the wharf. The steamers left for town shortly after five o'clock. The day was a good one for sailing, but owing to the recent bad weather a large number of sailing boats which had intended to compete were unable to be present. On this account the sailing boat.race, the first event on the programme, had to be postponed until a later date. Messrs. J. Pegler and J. Day acted as starters and handicappers of the rowing races, whilst members of the North Shore Yacht Club and Ponsonby Cruising Club acted in a similar capacity in regard to the sailing events.
