[BY TELBQRAPH.—PRE93 ASSOCIATION.] ' > Dunedin, Monday. The following Stock Exchange sales have been reported :—Milburn Lime and Cement (new issue), 14s 9d; New Zealand Drug Company (£2), LONDON FINANCIAL JOTTINGS. [PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] London, October 3Q. The Union Bank of Australia notifies that it is prepared to pay on and after November 2 the interest due at that date on the city of Wellington (New Zealand) loan, 1908, viz., £100,000. It is estimated that there are approximately 150,000 boot and shoe workers in the United States. They turn out 250,000,000 pairs of boots, shoes, and slippers per annum, having an aggregate factory value of £70,000,000. In view of the effect of the new English patent law the Berlin Ministry of the Interior is elaborating a revision of the existing Prussian patent legislation, and is in consultation with the industrial centres concerned in order to learn Their wishes on the subject. The desire is ex{jressed that the revision should also Include egislation regarding the marking of goods and samples /or trade purposes. i A report cabled from Lisbon a few days ago states that " some negotiation will be made for the leasing of the Laurenco Marques railway to a , South African syndicate for a sum which would tide the Government over its present difflcuties, while leaving the railway under Portuguese control." A letter signed by 22 Liberal M.P.'s is being forwarded to the various Liberal associations throughout the country enclosing a resolution for ; adoption. In which the Government is urged to Introduce a Taxation of Land Values Bill, so as to raise revenue and deal with the question of unemployment. The Kaiser's new Bill proposing taxes on gas and electricity appliances, and, in fact, all kinds of lighting apparatus, continues to be the subject of strong attacks throughout the German Empire. The imposition, if effected, would mean an enormous addition to the cost of lighting, equal, in certain circumstances, to an increase In the retail price of the articles of from 50 per cent, to 60 per cent. For instance, the Bill schedules a tax of 10 pfennigs upon incandescent gas mantles, which now sell at from 18 pfennigs to 25 pfennigs, and a similar levy also upon ordinary electric light" bulbs. To carry out the measure It is proposed to stamp or mark specially every article coming within its purview and to place all factories where they are made under 1 the permanent supervision of the excise authorities. It has been discovered that there is in circulation a number of counterfeit half-sovereigns. So far those which have been received at the Bank of England are comparatively few, and it is hoped that only few are passing among the public. The coins are of remarkably good manufacture and are' difficult of detection except by weighing. The standard weight of a halfsovereign is 61.63 grains. The fraudulent coins, according to tests which have been made at tho Royal Mint are composed of an alloy of silver and gold, the former metal being present to the extent of approximately 30 grains in each coin. As pieces of metal, simply, the false halfsovereigns are worth about 5s each. LONDON. By Telegraph.—Press Association— LOndos, December 6. FROZEN MEAT.
