THE BARRIER CABLE.
Sir,—Apropos of your extremely interesting account of tho.laying of the Groat Barrier cable, your readers would perhaps like to know that, thanks to private enterprise, the conveyance of, the voice human by electricity's aid is not unknown in what you term " that lonely spot." At tho very bay where tho cable was landed on Saturday there is a four-milo stretch of telephone wire, connecting the house of Mr. Blair at Tryphena with that of Mr. Medland at the other side of the island. The total cost of this installation was only £6. The Great Barrier Progressive Council are endeavouring to get tho whole of tho 10 settlements of the island connected with tho cable, and thus got into telephonic touch with Auckland. May we hope for tho active political assistance of tho mainland, as such would bo very helpful? T. Wake, ' Hon. Secretary.
