SOCIALISM.
—In order to reason, logically upon any subject wo must first of all have a clear definition of that _ subject. The definition •which Webster gives of socialism is this:.. " .social Btato, in which there is a com-: munity of property among all its citizens." Mr; J. D. llyun contends that socialism is already here, bub until tho above condition fully exists his contention is futile. In tho whole range of anciont or of modern history can lie supply us with a single instance in which this condition lifts actually existed, oxoopt in societies very limited in numbers, and then only for very limited periods of time?. As Mr. Evvington has said, wherever (socialism has teen tried it has resulted in utter failure. A littlo experience is worth a great deal of theory, and tho exporienco of the past proves that socialism is impossible in tho present selfish condition of mankind. ' C'IIAELES Hardy.
