Graham brought up the question of the use of red birch timber for sleepers by the Public Works Department. Settlers with experience of the lasting qualities of red birch were well satisfied with it, he said, and would like to see it tested for sleepers. There was an abundance of red birch at the Molu to supply the whole requirements of the East Coast railway. The : union resolved that the Public Works De- > paitment be asked to send an export to • examine and test this timber, and offered to show the Department's officer through the district. It was also resolved to re- • quest the Motu branch.and the chambers ' of commerce at Gisborne and Auckland to support the object of the motion.
