HARBOUR FATALITY.
A SEAMAN DROWNED
The breastwork in Quay-street., at the foot of Albert-street, whs the .scene of ." fatal accident last evening. An able-bodied seaman named-flames Burnett was walking along to the «dge. when be suddenly swerved, and tell over into the water. Two ladies, who Mere standing in the vicinity, immediately? informed Constable Clark, who hurried to the scene and jumped over. He secured.the unfortunate man, and, catching hold of a ropo, managed to support hhn until Sergeant Ramsay and Constables Armstrong and Woods came to his assistance.. A rope was thrown in, and, although Clark had the utmost difficulty in keeping his companion afloat, he managed to tie it around him, and the man was hauled ashore in an unconscious condition.
Measures to restore animation were tried, but without avail, and when Dr. Parkes, who had been summoned, arrived he could Duly pronounce life extinct. Barnett, who was 48 years of age. was born in London, and worked on the local coastal vessels for several years, lust sewing on the Ngapuhi, from which he was dischar-ed on July 23. Since then he had been boarding at the Sailors' Home. An inquest will be held.
