CRICKET IN ENGLAND.

TWENTY-NINE CENTURIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association —Copyright London, August 19. Phenomenal scoring has boon recorded in county cricket lately. Twenty-nine centuries have been scored in the last eight clays, including 10 this week. Surrey, 532 for eight wickets, of which Marshall made 167, beat Kent by an innings and 318 runs. Essex made 573 for nine wickets against Northampton, MeGnhey scoring 230. Middlesex totalled 531 for eight" wickets against Notts, Tarrant scoring 111 (not out). Lancashire took their total against Leicester to 596, of which Tyldesley scored 213.

Wieden does not give any record of previous successions ot big totals and individual scores covering a number of county matches so that a comparison cannot bo made, but there arc, of course, many inetatues of single gam'.* productive of phenomenal scoring. The scoring of over 500 , runs by Surrey, Essex, Middlesex, and Lancashire in an inning*?, or portion of <\n innings, has often upon exceeded. Therecord for the highest score made, in ."lll*tz~—— clnss cricket in one innings i* held by this New South Wales team, which made 918 against South Australia at Sydney in January, 1901. Five centuries were made in Ibis innings, bv S. K. Gregory (168>, M*. A. Noble (153), L 0. S. Poidevin (110. not out), It. A. Duff (119), and F. A. Irerlale (118). Special interest attaches to the cabled menage in that it telle of the continued success of the Australian*, Marshall and Tarrant.
