THE MUD VOLCANO.
A SETTLER'S RECOLLECTIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.— correspondent.] Gisbokne, Tuesday. ' With reference to the eruption at the Wai« mate, mud springs, a settler supplies the following; interesting information: —" I have known of those mud springs for over twenty-five years, and several eruption*. have "taken plaoe during that period. The recent ones were in the autumn of 1901, and again on MJarch 15, 3907. There seems to have been an increasing pressure of gas in this locality, if we may judge from the larger amount of mud throwp up during each succeeding eruption. These special saline mud springs with gas have a considerable "beating 'on the location of petroleum, and are, therefore, particularly interesting, especially when take? in conjunction with ft line of \ allied indications, extending for some .17 or 18 miles in length."-
