THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL.
.*. [BY TELEGRAPH— CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Tuesday. Thb monthly meeting of the Thames County Council was held to-day,' Mr. It. W. Bagna.ll presiding. Tenders for road works were accepted as follows :—Puriri-Nflavesville, .James Odium, £77; Neavesvil.'le to Golden Belt, H. Wright, £23. A letter was received from the Education BoaTd asking the Council to provide and fix the necessary drain pipes from the water-table into the Farawai school grounds. This was agreed to, and instructions were given to proceed with the work. A special meeting of the Ootincil was also held for the purpose of confirming a previous resolution establishing a special drainage board at Wharepoa. The chairman stated that this resolution ha'd been carried by the Council after careful consideration at the request of the majority of the ratepayers of the district, who had signed a petition to that effect, and he referred to the fact that the Council had gone to considerable expense in making the necessary inspections of the district. The speaker expressed. himself as strongly in favour of the proposal, which was necessary for the improvement of the district, but seeing that of the original 58 ratepayers who had signed the petition in favour of it 10 had withdrawn their names, the preponderance of votes was now against the proposal, and under the circumstances the Council could not very well go on with it, .he moved, "That no further action be taken in the matter." This was agreed to after considerable discussion, in which a deputation of ratepayers of the district in question Joined, the close of the .meeting being somewhat stormy.
