- . •! . The* West End attackers," strengthened as' the}' were by the inclusion of Philson, gave a very fine display 011 Saturday. The passing and catching were quick and accurate, ana on several occasions the ball wac brought almost straight from centre by rapid passing into the goal net.. . '<" '■■■..•■ < • • McCoy ' usually got the ball from the "face,"* and at once despatched it away to his vanguard. v Fhilson, Marshall, and A. Walton were the "homes" who constituted the attack, and they proved to be a very diligent trio. ' Weekes, right attack,' was never lax in helping on a rush, and at times showed a "clean pair of heels" to his checker. The Auckland attack was checked at its inception by Carpenter, West End, who cleverly kept the third home practically out of the game; This in a great measure spoilt their combination and caused such a famine in goals, they only scoring three in the afternoon's play. Owing to the inclement weather that prevailed both teams were shorthanded, so the West End and Auckland captains decided to fill tho places of their absentee members with some men from the Grafton Club who were present and had no objection to a . " flutter " in the mud. Tho Auckland captain was in error in playing Graham on defence. He left the change until too late.
