MINING NEWS.
AVAITANGI. fin" TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. Tin-: drive westward along tho hangbigwall of the main reef at the low love! in tho Waitangi mine lias been driven % distance of 9ft during tho week, and the* reef has been stripped for that distance. The bangingwnll rib, which is about 4ft in thickness, has been broken down for about half the distance during the fait two d.-ijy with encouraging results. The. lick tellerido scam is not quite so strong and well defined as it was when cut in the crosscut, and it seems to be more distributed through the quartz, in which nice dabs of gold have been seen, with good mineral indications. In the eastern end of the mino the drive along the reef is now in a distance of 56ft from the break, and the reef appears to be taking a. turn to the northward in the face. The assay taken from this end last week gave a value of £3 12s 8d per ton, but the quarto broken later does not look quite so well. The manager (Mr. A. Whitley) will retire to-day in, consequence of having received the appointment of inspector of mines in the South Island. The manager of the mine telegraphed to the secretary (Mr. 11. J. Lee) on Saturday morning as follows:—"Breaking down main reef in. western section; .secured stone showing dabs of gold, lied: still well mineralised." MAY QUEEN. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. Satisfactory progress is still being made with the deepening of the Queen of Beauty shaft in the May Queen mine, and no serious difficulty has yet been experienced in coping with the water. The crosscut south on the main-reef from this shaft is being continued in addition to the northern cross" cut to intersect the May Quoon lodes. In the latter more favourable country is being met with. The winze on the bangingwalT branch lode has been sunk a distance of 28ft below No. 6 level, and the prospect.'! .met with so far are very encouraging, gold being seen freely-through the quartz broken, which also yields a little picked stone at each breaking down. Stoping operations on the footwall branch above- 'Nos. 6 and 5 levels are also being continued, and the ore coming to hand at present is of improved quality and shows goid freely at each breaking down. SOUTHERN QUEEN. [BIT TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. The leading stope above No. 2 level on the Atlantic reef, in the Southern Queen mine, has been carried along for a length of about 100 ft. The quartz coming to hand continues to look well, and more or less picked stone is selected from the general dirt at each breaking-down. VICTORIA. [liY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. Tho principal work in progress iu the Victoria mine is the stoping operations on the hangingwall leader, above No. 2 level, and although the leader is small in size the ore being obtained is of good quality.
