ASIATICS IN TRANSVAAL.
THE REGISTRATION ACT. AN AMENDMENT PROMISED. By Telegraph—Press Association.— Pretoria, June 17. Altogether 9072 Asiatics, practically the whole of the Asiatic community in the Transvaal, have registered voluntarily . under the compromise effected with the Government. Nevertheless, the latter, yielding to the Imperial Government's representations on behalf of its Indian subjects, is willing to legislate for an amendment of the Registration Act. ■ ■ " ? ■' The Asiatics referred to in the cable- are those engaged in trading pursuits, and do not include the Chinese coolies employed in the Rand mines. The latter are being repatriated at the rate of something like 2000 a month. At present there are 21,667 employed, as against 51,480 in January last.
